Comparison of Thematic Content of Two Dickinson Poems (Poems 14 and 15)

Both poems show Dickinsons negative perspective on marriage. In ‘Title Divine – is mine!’ is made clear that women are just there to entertain the men. From the text in line 10, ‘Born – Bridalled – Shrouded –‘ you can conclude that Emily thinks of life as being born, then being controlled by men your whole life, and after that you die and your dead body gets covered up. In line 15 she asks ‘Is this – the way?’, she most likely finds it astonishing that life cannot get any better than that in her perspective.

In ‘She rose to His Requirement – dropt’ is said that when a women becomes a wife, she has to give up many things in life that she cares about, just to please her man.

To conclude, Emily Dickinson doesn’t have a very positive view on marriage, she didn’t think that marriage could be beautiful as well, instead of disgusting and cramped.
