- Obama mentions a lot of things which have to do with the history of the United States of America. He refers back to the settlers of America and then wants to mention especially that all different races have come to America and everyone needs to be treated equally and that all the racist thing that are happening in the United States of America. He refers back to the speech of Martin Luther King and his famous words ‘I have a dream’ were Obama use almost the exact same words repeatedly in his famous speech which made him very popular. He also refers back to the conservative government which was there for several years who did not represent all Americans and he wanted to change this, so he compares the government in the past to now. This references are really important this see the difference between the future when he is a better president than the presidents that were before him. He tried to talk to all classes in the society in the USA , races and kinds of people that are in the society America and he expresses this in a strong matter which makes that everyone understand where he is coming from. Finally, he wants this interpreted this that he represent all people of the United States of America.
- You can clearly recognize that the famous speech was built on the speech of Martin Luther King, you can clearly find all aspects of the speech of Obama. Firstly, the most memorable phrase that Martin Luther King used a lot in his speech was ‘I have a dream’ and this what Obama, also used in his speech to support what Martin Luther King said in the past and what he says, now. So historical context is used to support his view on the United States of America now in the 20th century and in the 1960s. Martin Luther King used multiple stylistic devices to make his point come across clearer. He uses to quote ‘I Have dream’ an endless amount of times in his famous speech to makes his point. You could see that build up was almost the same, because Obama used repetition almost at same parts of his speech as Martin Luther King. This is a good thing, because than the audience who have listened to this speech can relate the text better and really understand what is to most important thing and what they both want to achieve in their speeches. You can see that the stylistic devices stands out the most in those particular devices and this, also makes why they are so memorable. Without the speech of Martin Luther king and his famous I think that Obama could not deliver such as memorable speech, because the stylistic devices that we are used made that it connected great with each other, so that his point became more clear.
Reflection:
To conclude, first I did not really knew why how intertextuality was put in a speech and what kind of helpful effects had on the audience, this means that you than not only have to focus content, but also stylistic features and how you present it. Now, I know when you use references from the past you will inform the audience from the past. That not everyone is born in a rich environment and when you work hard you can achieve something. When you look famous speeches it can help you a lot on writing your own speech. I found quite difficult to find the right vocabulary analyse a speech in which is a good about and which could be done better. I think propaganda is a really easy to find in a speech, because you can see that particular vocabulary is used to convince certain people.
